Alfred (Al) Andrew Herman,a husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on
February 4, 2024 in Klamath Falls, OR after 84 years. Alfred or Al as everyone knew
him by, was born January 21, 1940 in Merced, CA to Andrew J. Herman and Nellie E.
(Redding) Herman. Alfred had two younger brothers David and Richard. Al attended
grammar school in Ashview, CA and graduated from Chowchilla Union High School in
1958.
After high school he enlisted in the Army. His basic training was at the Fort Ord, CA
base. Upon an honorable discharge from the Army, Al worked for various farmers in
Chowchilla. While living in Chowchilla, Al ran his own fertilizer business with his
partner and brother Richard Herman.
In 1963 Alfred met his wife, Verna Wyatt from Dairyland, CA at a friend’s wedding.
They were married on August 16, 1963 in CHURCH in Chowchilla, CA. They welcomed
two boys Greg in 1966 and Michael in 1968.
In 1968 Al and Richard sold their fertilizer business to Oxcidental Chemical. Al stayed
on with Oxcidental and moved the family to Tulelake, CA. There he managed the Oxy
plant for the company and made Tulelake the family's home until his death. In the winter
of 1983 Al and John Crowell became partners in Tri-County Ag Service, serving farmers
in the Klamath Basin and surrounding areas. In 1998, Al retired from the fertilizer
business and began farming and raising cattle.
In 2003, Al and Verna took over managing the Winema Lodge in Tulelake, CA. Opening
it for year-round business, welcoming hunters and travelers from all over to visit the Lava
Beds, surrounding parks, as well as bat and bird watchers. Al enjoyed visiting with all the
guests from around the country and world who visited the Lodge. In 2020 Al and Verna
retired from the Lodge and he spent his time farming until 2023.
Alfred and Verna attended all the sporting events of their two boys, Greg and Michael.
They also attended many of the grandkids’ games and school events at Tulelake High
School. Al was a very active member of the with the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair Buyers
Dinners and was a ring man at the Tulelake- Butte Valley Fair 4-H/FFA Junior Livestock
Auction for 20 plus years. Alfred and Verna volunteered countless hours to the Tulelake
FFA over the years. Al had a great love for his family, grandchildren, hunting, fishing,
and his cattle.
Alfred is preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Nellie Herman, brothers - Richard and
David Herman, sisters-in-law Linda and Mary Herman, Donna Wyatt, and Marilynn Wyatt.
Alfred is survived by his wife of 60 years, Verna of Tulelake, Sons – Greg (Toni)Herman,
Michael Herman. Grandchildren, Gary (Samatha) McCoy, Daren (Autumn) McCoy, Breanne
(Obie) Donnell, Patryk (Ranea) Herman, SD, Brett (Jessica) Herman, Ethan (Alyssa) Herman,
Logan (Katherine)Herman, Taylor (Zach) Wood. 19 great- grandchildren and numerous nieces
and nephews.
Al has been cremated and his ashes will be spread with his beloved dog Annie. There will be a
celebration of life held on June 14th, 2024 at the Winema Lodge in Tulelake, CA.
