John Philip Brunswick, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, physician, storyteller, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2026, at the age of 92, with his family by his side. John was born on February 27, 1934, in Elkhorn, Wisconsin to Lisle and Marion Brunswick.

From an early age, John loved sports and enjoyed playing a variety of them. In high school, he played both golf and baseball. After graduating from high school, he attended Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, before pursuing his medical education at McGill Medical School in Montreal, Canada.

Following medical school, John enlisted in the U.S. Public Health Service and was stationed in Mt. Edgecumbe, Alaska, where he served as a Coast Guard officer and provided medical care to the Native population. After his time in Alaska, John continued his commitment to serving underserved communities when he worked in Fort Defiance, Arizona, on the Navajo Reservation, providing medical care to the local Navajo population.

It was in Alaska that John met the love of his life, Elizabeth Jean Rose "Betty," originally from North Dakota. Their story began when Betty brought John cookies on the labor and delivery unit, an act that stole his heart. They were married in Alaska on November 2, 1962, beginning a marriage that would last 63 years.

John and Betty quickly began their family. In 1963, they welcomed their first son, J.Eric Brunswick, followed by Chris David Brunswick, and Kurt Philip Brunswick. Eventually, John and Betty moved their family from Alaska to Portland, Oregon, where John began his long and rewarding career as a pediatrician with the Keizer Health System. He remained dedicated to caring for children and families throughout his entire medical career.

John and Betty shared a love of adventure and travel and created a lifetime of memories with their boys. Family trips included camping, fishing, and travels throughout the United States and Canada. Later, John and Betty traveled extensively in their motorhome and explored much of the world together, including Australia, Canada, Central America, and South America.

John was a talented wood-turner who created beautiful wooden bowls and other works of art. He and Betty enjoyed taking art classes together, always learning and refining their crafts. His hands were rarely idle, and his woodworking became another expression of his creativity, patience, and love of making beautiful things.

John was also a gifted storyteller. He possessed a witty sense of humor and seemed to have a wonderful story for nearly every occasion. Family gatherings were often centered around a large table, over dinner or coffee, where stories were shared and memories were made. John and Betty were avid readers, a passion reflected in more than 4,000 books that filled their home library.

Family was the center of John's life. He treasured his children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends, and he took great joy in the time they spent together. His warmth, humor, curiosity, intelligence, and love of life will remain part of the family stories for generations to come.

John is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Jean "Betty" Brunswick, who died on July 24, 2025. After 63 years of marriage, John was reunited with Betty just 387 days later. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Lisle and Marion Brunswick.

John is survived by his sister, Barbara Ingram of Bristol, England; his nephews Peter Ingram, Douglas Ingram, and Jonathan Ingram and their families in England; his children, J. Eric and Christina Brunswick of Klamath Falls, Oregon; Chris and Denise Brunswick of Rainier, Oregon; and Kurt Brunswick of Portland, Oregon; his grandchildren Eavan Brunswick, Oona Brunswick, Margaret Brunswick, Katheryn Brunswick, and Evan Brunswick. He is also survived by the Rose family and Ann Field, along with many dear friends and extended family members.

John will be greatly missed for his wonderful stories, quick wit, love of family, passion for sports, appreciation of books, and beautiful woodworking. Most of all, he will be remembered for the love he shared with Betty and the family they built together.

A celebration of John's life will be held at a later date.
